Mayor Pro Tem Mai Vang Launches Re-Election Campaign
SACRAMENTO – Mayor Pro Tem Mai Vang launched her re-election campaign, seeking to continue her dedicated service to advance the diverse and vibrant communities in District 8. With an unwavering commitment to bringing vital investments to South Sacramento and advocating for working families, Councilmember Vang aims to build upon her record of accomplishments and amplify the voices of constituents in District 8.
“When I was elected to the Sacramento City Council, I made a commitment to never stop fighting for you and our South Sacramento communities. For too long, South Sacramento families have been left behind and we’re treated as an afterthought.
During my time representing District 8 on City Council, we changed that. Together, we fought to bring resources to our families and businesses during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, led one of the most culturally and linguistically diverse vaccination clinic in the country, established the Sacramento Children’s Fund to ensure steady funding for our young people, created the Food Justice Taskforce to address food insecurity in our neighborhoods, championed the purchase of 102 acres in South Sac for community development, expanded affordable housing units in our District, and secured over $20 million of public investments to support community programs and public infrastructure for District 8.”
“Together, we have been in some tough battles with tremendous success but the herculean work ahead in our city still remains. Sacramento is no longer affordable for working families, our youth are struggling more than ever and for every 1 person we house, 3 more become unhoused. We have a fight ahead to address the root causes of these issues so that every youth, senior and resident in South Sacramento can have access to affordable housing, clean and safe neighborhoods.
That’s why I am announcing our campaign for re-election to the Sacramento City Council. As the daughter of Hmong refugees and a Sacramento native, I’ve always been a fighter and I will never give up on the community that raised me. I look forward to building on our collective progress and continuing the fight alongside you.”
Mai Vang was first elected to the Sacramento City Council in November 2020. Prior to her election, was a community organizer in South Sacramento and served as a member of the Sacramento City School Board. Mai is running to represent the newly redrawn District 8, which includes Meadowview, Cabrillo, Detroit, Deerfield/Mesa Grande, Valley Hi, Delta Shores, and North Laguna Creek.
The primary election will be held on March 5, 2024.
